Interests

Beyond work and politics, here's what I get up to: the hobbies, places, and communities that help visitors see me as a neighbour, not just a résumé.

Get to know me

City planning

I spend more time than I'd care to admit daydreaming about how cities grow, and how good policy can make them more livable.

I follow zoning debates, city planning, and neighbourhood design the way some people follow sports standings. I make fantasy transit maps instead of fantasy football teams.

I delegate at city council committee meetings and public hearings when good ideas need support, or when Ottawa is headed in the wrong direction.

I've got a passion for making things better that runs quite deep.

Competitive gaming

Competitive gaming taught me to communicate under pressure, think and adapt quickly, and show up for teammates when it counts.

From uOttawa's StarCraft club to captaining Luxorian Sun through the top levels of the Heroes of the Storm amateur scene, my competitive record has its own corner of this website.

Soccer

My love for soccer started during a student exchange to Spain that coincided with the 2004-05 NHL lockout season.

Closer to home, I've held season tickets for Atlético Ottawa, the New England Revolution, and CF Montréal (back when they were the Impact).

For two seasons I was a staff writer for Mount Royal Soccer, an English-language Montréal supporter blog in the SB Nation network. The site went offline when Vox ended their MLS coverage in 2023, but the connections we made live on.

Canoeing

Time on the water is my reset.

Relaxing afternoons on the Rideau River, portages through the city streets or the back country, and visits to Algonquin Park serve as a connection to my rural roots, and a reminder that Ontario's natural environment is worth protecting.

Canoe trips are where I recharge between engineering sprints and campaign seasons. More than one painting of an Ontario waterway hangs in my home.

Cooking

Cooking is how Rachel, Simon, and I unwind together.

I like trying new recipes, improvising with what's in the fridge, and hosting friends around the table.

Ottawa's restaurant scene inspires a lot of what I attempt at home — see favourites below.

Camp Can-Aqua

Camp Can-Aqua shaped a lot of who I am. I spent summers there from 1999 through 2007, including years as a staff member from 2004 onward.

It's where I first learned to lead teams, solve problems with limited resources, and make education and fun one and the same.

Home automation

I run a home server/lab and spend too much time on home automation: networking, self-hosted services, and the occasional over-engineered light switch.

It's the engineer at play: the same curiosity that shows up in software work, without a sprint board attached.

Languages

English is my first language.

I picked up Spanish on my student exchange. It's good enough to get by, and to remind me how much language opens doors to new communities.

My French is a work in progress. Living in Ottawa makes French language skills necessary, rewarding, and possible. The semi-immersion this city and the University of Ottawa offer improved my French much more than simply studying it ever did.
